This is a quick, drive-by post on this text, but I haven’t had much time to keep up with this lately. I’m trying to post something every day though because I know if I don’t, I’ll stop updating this completely.
Now on to Arcadia…
This is the first I’ve read of Stoppard. It was a very interesting read - witty, smart, romantic, sensual, etc. and effortlessly weaves together philosophy, history, and science.
The play takes place in two different centuries, and Stoppard manages to link the two different eras through not only a fun mystery involving Lord Byron, but through the similarities that exist within his characters. While I enjoy anything that makes me laugh, I love when a text makes me think. Stoppard not only presents complex dichotomies, but he is able to turn them on their side and present them so differently than is the norm in literature. It’s just amazing.
A local theatre is performing the play in April. I’m hoping I’ll be able to attend because while this is enjoyable to read and discuss, I can only imagine that a performance takes it to a whole other level. It definitely won’t be the last Stoppard I read.
